CHICAGO (CHICAGO URBAN DAILY)— The votes are in, and Illinois went blue — big. Governor J.B. Pritzker won a historic third term Tuesday night, and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton is headed to the U.S. Senate.
The Associated Press called the governor’s race for Pritzker over Republican Darren Bailey in their rematch. It is the first third term for an Illinois governor in about 40 years. In Chicago, Pritzker took nearly 86 percent of the vote.
Stratton’s win was called as soon as the polls closed. With about three-quarters of votes counted by 10 p.m., she led former state Republican chairman Don Tracy 61 percent to 37 percent. She greeted cheering supporters at an election watch party on Chicago’s South Side. In Chicago, she took nearly 86 percent.
Stratton, who served eight years as Pritzker’s lieutenant governor, will succeed retiring Sen. Dick Durbin. Her running mate as lieutenant governor, Christian Mitchell, was elected alongside Pritzker.
It was a sweep down the ballot. Democrats held every statewide office: Alexi Giannoulias won another term as Secretary of State, Kwame Raoul as Attorney General, Margaret Croke as Comptroller, and Michael W. Frerichs as Treasurer.
Pritzker has dodged questions about whether he will seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. First comes unfinished business at home — including a potentially key veto session in Springfield later this month.
