CHICAGO (CHICAGO URBAN DAILY)— Today is the day, Chicago. Election Day is here. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. — and if you are in line by 7 p.m., you can still vote.

More than 280,000 Chicago ballots were already cast before today — just under 20 percent of registered voters, with nearly 180,000 voting early in person and more than 100,000 mail ballots returned. Today decides the rest.

At the top of the ballot, Governor J.B. Pritzker is seeking a third term against Republican Darren Bailey in a rematch. Voters also fill the open U.S. Senate seat being left by Dick Durbin, with Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, Don Tracy, and Whitfield Harrington Jr. in the race.

Closer to home, Chicago voters elect the president of the Chicago Board of Education and representatives from all 20 school board subdistricts — the first fully elected board, which takes office in January 2027. Cook County offices are on the ballot too.

And Chicagoans answer three nonbinding citywide advisory questions: whether the city should restart gunshot detection technology, whether it should develop a permanent festival and outdoor event space, and whether it should seek federal compensation for costs tied to immigration enforcement operations. Advisory means they record voters’ opinion — they change no law by themselves.

The weather is cooperating: warm and breezy with highs around 70 degrees, and any real showers likely holding off until after the polls close.
