CHICAGO (CHICAGO URBAN DAILY)— Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and Chicago is making the most of it. From Northalsted to Navy Pier to Washington Park, the city is one big costume party today.
The centerpiece is Haunted Halsted. The Halloween fest and parade turns 30 this year, with an expanded all-day street festival on North Halsted Street starting at noon — more than 50 vendors, live entertainment, family activities, trick-or-treating at more than 25 businesses, and a kids zone. At 7 p.m., more than 300 costumed participants take over the street for the parade, followed by a costume contest and post-parade party with $4,000 in prizes. Admission is free.
Downtown, Navy Pier goes Slightly Spooky. Trick-or-treating starts at 11 a.m., with activities from 1 to 5 p.m. and a costume contest from 3 to 5 p.m. — all free. When the sun goes down, Crystal Gardens screens Ghostbusters at 5:30 p.m. and the original Halloween (1978) at 7:30 p.m.
On the South Side, Washington Park flips the parade upside down — literally. The 7th annual UPSIDE DOWN Halloween Parade runs from noon to 2 p.m. on Russell Drive, where families in costume become the parade itself, walking past dancers, acrobats, puppetry, and sports mascots.
And for the night owls, the Chicago Theatre hosts the Rocky Horror Picture Show Spooktacular Tour at 7:30 p.m. — a new 4K restoration with a live shadow cast, audience participation, original cast appearances, and a costume contest. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
However you celebrate — candy bag or costume contest — stay safe, look out for the little ones, and enjoy the best night of the fall.
