Padres End the Party: Cubs Swept Out of October With 4-1 Game 2 Loss

CHICAGO URBAN DAILY

CHICAGO (CHICAGO URBAN DAILY)—While the South Side celebrates, the North Side is packing up.

The San Diego Padres swept the Chicago Cubs out of the National League wild-card series Wednesday, taking Game 2 by a 4-1 score at Petco Park and ending Chicago’s season far earlier than anyone expected from baseball’s highest-scoring team.

The Cubs finally cracked the door open in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs — and the Padres slammed it shut when Dansby Swanson flied out. The dagger came in the seventh: pinch-hitter Gavin Sheets, who opened the 2026 season with a pinch-hit homer on Opening Day, dug out a 101 mph fastball from Daniel Palencia and launched a two-run shot into the right-field seats.

“Holy Sheets!” Petco Park called it, and they weren’t wrong.

San Diego heads to Milwaukee for Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday against the Brewers, baseball’s hottest team. The Cubs head home for an offseason full of questions about a lineup that scored and scored all summer — and fell silent when it mattered most.

One city, two Octobers: the Sox sweep on, the Cubs sweep out. Only in Chicago.
